A 48-year-old man from Birbhum died, and six other members of his family were hospitalized after consuming turtle meat and khichuri (a rice-lentil dish). The deceased, Swadhin Bagdi, passed away early Saturday morning at Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital. His death follows severe food poisoning symptoms that began after the family consumed the meal two to three days prior. The other family members, who also developed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, were admitted to local hospitals in Dubrajpur, Khoyrasol, and Suri.
The family reportedly consumed turtle meat along with khichuri during the night. Soon after, they started experiencing gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting and diarrhea. Swadhin and his wife, Motra Bagdi, were transferred to Suri Hospital due to the worsening of their conditions. Swadhin’s condition continued to decline, prompting his referral to Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital, where he died Saturday morning.
Block Health Officer Sabysachi Roy confirmed that food poisoning was a major factor in Swadhin's death but also mentioned that other underlying health issues may have contributed to his condition. He stated that the remaining family members, who had been admitted for treatment, are now stable, and three are expected to be discharged soon. The others are still undergoing treatment at Dubrajpur Hospital.
The investigation into the incident continues, and health authorities are monitoring the village for any additional cases of foodborne illness. As of now, no other residents have been reported to show similar symptoms. Health officials are examining the safety of consuming turtle meat and advising caution, as the food has not been formally deemed unsafe but is being reviewed for potential health risks.
